Today, I choose to be thankful ...

Worry over finances. Worry over not having enough. Today, I was tested on what matters.

I pass through the aisles of a department store. Not to shop, but to pay a previous month's expense. My eyes were bombarded with the latest styles. "It would be nice to have that in my wardrobe" ... only a quick thought as I make my way out of the store. No new things in hand. Self-control exercised.

Then at home, busy over an experiment with my 7-year old ... making our own wind vane. Supplies were gathered: pencil, pin, paper, stapler, scissors.

Then it happens. Three-year old son cuts a slit on my beloved jacket hanging on a chair.

A scream. A shout. Panic. I loose it. Anger wells. I take a ruler in hand ... ready to deliver a punishment.

But I fell to my knees. Tears stream down my disappointed face as I was quickly reminded of a book ... of a person who encouraged me to choose thanksgiving when something ugly happens.

Two pairs of eyes look at a momma who is speechless - thinking of what to do next. I walked to my bedroom closet with jacket in hand. How to repair. It can't be mended. Ruined.

I was on the floor crying. Over what? A jacket? Really? Can I move past this emotion?

Okay, Lord. I will choose to be thankful ...

I asked daughter to call son into our room. I hug him tight and say these words:
"Jesus, thank you for this son who knows how to make me laugh. Thank you for his little hands that knows how to cut with scissors."

My heart quiets. My heart swells. Not of anger, but of thanksgiving. Joy instead of sorrow.

I look at my little man straight in his eyes and say, "Mommy loves you. I know you are sorry that you cut my jacket, but mommy still love you." And we hugged some more.

Choosing thanksgiving over anger takes practice Ann says. Change don't come over night. Today, I am one step closer to a life of joy ... to a life FULL in Him.
